Snaked last month and clogged again? That is the jetting question
A line that backs up weeks after a snaking is the usual reason Ocoee homeowners and property managers ask about hydro jetting. If water is rising now, our 24/7 line is open, and until the plumber arrives, stop sending water down that line.
A cable usually punches a hole through the blockage and leaves the coating on the pipe wall. Think of a straw pushed through thick milkshake. Water drains for a while, then the walls catch new debris and the hole closes.
Hydro jetting sends pressurized water through a hose and nozzle so the spray scours the inside of the pipe and carries the debris downstream. It cleans the pipe. It does not repair one, and that limit shapes everything below.
Cable machine or jetting: what each leaves behind
The two tools solve different problems. Picking the wrong one is how clogs come back.
After a cable
- A clear channel through the center of the blockage.
- Grease and scale still stuck to the walls.
- Roots chopped back but their stubs still in the joint.
- Fine for a fresh, single-point clog.
After jetting
- Walls rinsed along the length the nozzle travels.
- Grease and silt carried away instead of pushed aside.
- Roots cut back, though a root-filled joint still needs a repair look.
- Better for lines that clog every few months or years.
If a cable already stalled partway down your line, do not keep forcing it. That stall is information, and a camera should read it before anyone sends water in.
Same clog, third time?
Call and ask for a camera look first, then a jetting plan with a clear price before work starts.
A backup that will not clear: what to do right now
These situations call for a plumber the same day, and some for tonight.
Sewage in the lowest fixtures
Wastewater in a shower, tub or floor drain means the line is blocked downstream. Keep every tap off and call.
A cable that stopped short
If someone ran a snake and it jammed or came back with nothing, stop. The blockage may be a broken section, which jetting would not cure.
Several units on one line
In a duplex, rental or small commercial building, tell the manager and have everyone stop using water. One blocked line takes down every unit it serves.
Slow drains and a faint sewer smell
This is not a midnight call. A same-day appointment when available gives time for a camera look before jetting.
After hours, the call reaches dispatch and the plumber helps decide whether this needs a visit tonight or first thing in the morning.
A jetting visit, camera first
Jetting follows a look inside the pipe, not the other way round.
Camera through the line
A technician can run a small camera from a cleanout or removed fixture to see grease, roots, scale, sags or breaks. This is where a repair-not-clean call gets made.
Decide and price
If the pipe is intact and coated with debris, jetting is proposed. You get a clear price before work starts, and a damaged pipe gets a repair conversation instead.
Jet from the access point
The hose and nozzle go in through the cleanout and the line is washed section by section toward the main.
Camera again, then flow test
A second pass shows the walls now. Water is run at the fixtures to confirm the line carries a normal load.
Where jetting fits and where it does not
The pipe material and condition decide this, which is why the camera comes first.
| Pipe or problem | Jetting a good fit? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Grease buildup | Usually yes | Water scours the film that a cable only drills through. |
| Roots at a joint | Often, with a catch | Roots can be cut back, but the open joint will let them return. |
| Old cast iron | Only after a camera look | Scale can be cleaned, but thin or cracked walls may show leaks once cleared. |
| Bellied or sagging pipe | Cleans, does not cure | Water still pools in the dip, so clogs return until the pipe is corrected. |
| Collapsed or offset pipe | No | Cleaning cannot reconnect pipe. See sewer line repair options. |
A sag or break can only be confirmed by looking, which is what a sewer inspection is for.
What affects the cost of hydro jetting
Jetting is not priced the same on every line. These are the factors.
Homeowners policies typically respond to sudden and accidental damage and not to wear, gradual leaks or the pipe itself. Cleaning a line that keeps clogging is maintenance, so ask your insurer what applies.
Restaurants and shopping centers on SR 50 and Fifty West
The city's Fifty West district runs along SR 50 between SR 429 and Clarke Road, so busy food and retail lines are part of the local picture.
Food businesses and interceptors
The city's sewer-use manual, an undated draft on its site, says nonresidential food businesses shall have an approved oil and grease interceptor. Jetting the line past the interceptor does not replace servicing the interceptor, so ask who maintains it. Confirm current rules with Ocoee Utilities.
Shared lines in strip centers
In a building with several tenants, one kitchen can clog a line others share. A camera pass traces which tenant's line the grease is coming from.
Apartments and multifamily
The same manual lets the utility order a multifamily property found to cause stoppages to stop sending grease down the line or to install an interceptor. A repeat stoppage there is a reason to fix the cause, not just rinse it out.
For a main line that serves more than one building or unit, see sewer line cleaning. For a single fixture, drain cleaning is usually enough, and we cover neighbors such as Apopka too.
Hydro jetting questions from Ocoee homes and businesses
Yes. A call at night or on a weekend reaches dispatch, and you decide with the plumber whether the backup needs a visit now. Sewage coming up through a drain should not wait.
Hydro jetting itself is often a planned follow-up after the line is made safe, and same-day appointments are offered when available.
Possibly, but not before a camera shows why it stopped. A cable stalls at a bend, a root mass, a big blockage or a broken joint.
If the pipe is broken or offset, cleaning will not fix it and the conversation turns to repair.
The risk is a weak pipe, not the water. Old cast iron can hide cracks and thin walls under buildup, and clearing them can reveal a leak. That is why the camera comes first and why we describe a limit rather than promise a result.
The camera and the symptoms decide. If only the main is blocked, that line may be enough. If several branches drain slowly or carry grease, cleaning the branches too can stop the repeat clogs.
You hear the options and a clear price before work starts.
Sometimes. If the smell comes from rotting buildup inside the pipe, cleaning removes the source. If it comes from a dry trap, a vent problem or a crack, jetting will not touch it.
Tell the plumber when the smell appears, because that timing narrows the cause.
The Florida Building Code text exempts clearing stoppages from permits, as long as the work does not replace or rearrange pipes. Repairs are different, since Ocoee lists plumbing among permit-required work.
