What the numbers say

A national range, and why your Ocoee quote may land outside it

NerdWallet's national cost guide, updated in September 2025, puts a tank-style heater at $600 to $2,500 and a tankless heater at about $1,400 to $3,900, installation included. Those are not Florida or Ocoee figures, and we found no published Orange County range to use instead.

Replacing a tank with tankless usually costs more than replacing it with another tank, because the job takes extra labor. NerdWallet notes that labor is more than half of the total in many installs.

So treat the range as a sanity check, not a quote. Ocoee Express Plumbing gives a clear price before work starts, after a plumber has seen your setup. We do not quote a tankless swap over the phone, because the gas, vent and electrical details decide it.

What moves the price up or down

Two houses with the same heater model can get very different totals. These are the choices that set the base price before any site problems show up.

Fuel and conversionReplacing gas with gas is the simplest path. Switching from electric to gas, or the reverse, adds new supply work and raises labor.
Unit size and flowA heater built for a bigger household or more fixtures at once costs more and draws more fuel or power.
Where it mountsA wall in an open garage is quick. A tight closet, an attic or a spot far from the old tank means more pipe and more time.
Labor hoursBecause labor is the biggest share of a national average, a tricky install moves the total more than the heater does.
Add-ons the plumber recommendsExtra valves, fittings or code items change the total. Ask for each one to be listed by name and price.

Homeowners insurance usually responds to sudden and accidental damage, such as a burst line, and not to wear, a gradual leak or the heater itself. A planned upgrade is not an insured event. Ask your insurer how your own policy treats a failed heater.

Site upgrades that push a tankless swap higher

These are the items a plumber checks on the day. Any of them can turn a modest quote into a big one.

ItemWhy it adds costWhat to ask
Gas lineThe Florida fuel gas code sizes gas piping to cover the maximum demand of all appliances served. A tankless unit has a higher input than a tank, so the existing line may be too smallIs my current gas line large enough for this unit, and what does upsizing involve?
VentingA tankless unit does not vent like a tank unit. The route and material follow the manufacturer's instructionsWhat vent route will you use, and does it need a new wall or roof opening?
Electrical supplyAn electric tankless draws a lot of power. We cannot give amperage figures here, so a plumber or electrician must check your panelDoes my panel have room, and does the circuit need to change?
Removing the old tankDraining, disconnecting and hauling away a tank takes timeIs removal in the price?
Permit and inspectionOcoee's 2025 fee sheet lists plumbing or gas alterations at $50 plus $5.50 per $1,000 of cost, with state surcharges extra. Electrical or mechanical permits may add to itWho pulls the permit, and is the fee listed on the quote?

Fee figures come from the City of Ocoee's 2025 sheet and can change, so confirm with the Building Division.

Tankless or another tank: what you pay for

The cheaper heater is not always the cheaper choice over time, and the reverse is also true.

Another tank-style heater

  • Lower national price range, $600 to $2,500
  • Fits the existing gas, vent and electric setup more often
  • ENERGY STAR says a replacement made in an emergency can limit you to less efficient models

A tankless heater

  • Higher national price range, about $1,400 to $3,900
  • ENERGY STAR gives gas tankless a life expectancy of 20 years
  • ENERGY STAR says a certified gas tankless saves a family of four about $95 a year on gas bills against a standard gas tank

That $95 is a national figure with a gas tank as the baseline, so an electric home will see different savings. A saving that size takes years to offset a higher install cost, which is why the 20-year life matters to the math.

Rebates and credits as of today

The federal 25C home improvement credit does not apply to a heater placed in service after December 31, 2025, per the IRS. If a quote you see still counts on that credit, ask what it assumes.

Duke Energy Florida's water heater rebate covers heat pump units only and states it is not available on tankless heaters. Peoples Gas lists $700 for a new gas tankless replacing an electric unit and $550 replacing a gas unit, but only for its customers, and it reserves the right to change or end the offer.

We could not confirm which gas or electric company serves a given Ocoee address. Check your bill, read the current terms on the utility's own page, and ask before the install, not after.

Ask these before you accept a tankless quote

A quote should be a list you can read line by line.

  • Is the gas line, vent and electrical work itemized?
  • Does the price include removing and hauling away the old tank?
  • Who applies for the permit, and does the fee appear on the quote?
  • What is the unit's flow rating, and does it suit the number of fixtures you run at once?
  • Do any utility rebates apply to my address, and what are the current terms?

Our tankless water heater service starts with a look at your existing setup, and we handle water heater installation for tank models too. We dispatch to Ocoee, Windermere and Winter Garden.

Tankless cost questions we hear in Ocoee

No. The IRS says the 25C credit is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Ask a tax professional about anything else you read online.

Duke Energy's water heater rebate excludes tankless units. Peoples Gas offers a rebate on gas tankless units to its own customers, with a flow rating of at least 5 GPM, and can change it without notice. We cannot say which utility serves your address, so confirm on your bill.

Possibly, but not always. Gas piping is sized for the total demand of the appliances on it, and a tankless unit has a higher input than a tank. A plumber checks the pipe size and run before pricing the job.

No. The gas, vent and electrical conditions differ from house to house. We give a clear price before work starts, once a plumber has seen the setup.

It depends on your fuel and install cost. ENERGY STAR's savings figure is for a family of four on gas against a gas tank. A smaller household saves less, so the longer 20-year life is the stronger reason.
