Disposal jammed, humming or leaking: what each sign means
A disposal that is leaking into the cabinet or backing up the sink needs help today, and our 24/7 line is open for it. While you wait, switch the disposal off at the wall, stop running water into the sink, and set a bowl under any drip. Keep your hand out of the unit, even when it looks dead.
Garbage disposal repair covers freeing a jam, replacing leaking seals and connections, and swapping the unit when the housing fails.
Hums but the plate does not turn
The motor has power, but something is wedged between the spinning plate and the grind ring. Long humming can burn out the motor, so switch it off.
Silent, no hum at all
Usually a tripped reset button on the underside, a tripped breaker or a dead outlet. If the reset trips again at once, a jam or a failing motor is the cause.
Water leaking
Where it drips matters. From the top ring, the mounting seal. From the side, a dishwasher or drain connection. From the bottom or seam, the housing has failed.
A smell that never leaves
Food film builds under the rubber splash guard and in the drain past the grinder. Cleaning the guard helps. A smell from lower down points to the trap or the line.
Sink drains slowly or backs up
Often the clog sits beyond the P-trap or in the dishwasher line, not in the grinder. Hold off running the dishwasher, because it drains through the same connection.
What to do first, safely, before anyone arrives
Turn the disposal off at the wall switch. Then unplug it under the sink or switch off its breaker, because a wall switch can be bumped back on.
Never put a hand into the unit, even with it off. Use tongs for anything you can see from above. Many models have a hex socket in the center of the underside where a wrench frees a seized plate, but only after power is off.
Skip chemical drain cleaners, which the EPA advises against, since they sit in the basin and splash when a technician works. Press the red reset button once. If it trips again, leave it alone.
Sink flooding or disposal dead?
Switch it off at the wall, keep your hand out, then call and describe the sound and the leak.
Repair or replace the disposal
Most jams and loose connections are repairs. A failed housing is not.
Repair when
- The unit hums and a jam frees with a wrench and a reset
- The leak comes from the top mounting seal, the dishwasher hose or the drain elbow gasket
- The motor runs smoothly after the jam is cleared
- The real clog sits in the drain beyond the unit
Replace when
- Water seeps from the bottom or the seam of the housing
- The reset trips again soon after a jam is cleared
- The mounting ring is cracked or the sink flange will not seal
- Rust shows around the base or the grinding plate is badly worn
If you already bought a new unit, tell us the brand. Mounting rings and drain outlets differ, and an old mount may not fit it. Fitting a disposal where none existed is a plumbing installation job with a new outlet and drain connection to plan.
What is allowed down it, per the city
The City of Ocoee sends new residents a grease control letter. Its list of don'ts includes putting greasy foods down the drain or in the garbage disposal, and it names meat fats, butter, cooking oil, gravy, salad dressing, dairy products and mayonnaise. A disposal chops food but does nothing to stop grease from coating the trap and the pipe beyond it.
The city's own tips are simple. Let cooking grease cool in a jar and put it in the trash, wipe pans before washing, scrape plates into the trash, and use a sink strainer. That keeps grease out of your line and out of the sewer, where the city says it causes clogs and backups.
Some foods jam a disposal for mechanical reasons. Fibrous stalks and peels wrap the plate, bones and pits wedge, and rice or pasta swells into paste. Run cold water while it works. If the sink still drains slowly with the unit empty, drain cleaning is the next call.
What affects the price of a disposal repair
Clearing a jam and fitting a new unit are very different jobs. These factors move the price.
Homeowners policies typically respond to sudden and accidental water damage, and not to wear, gradual leaks or the disposal itself. A cabinet floor soaked by a slow leak may be treated differently from a burst hose. Ask your insurer before you file.
What the technician does, in order
We do not diagnose a disposal by phone, but a description of the sound and of where it leaks helps a lot.
Confirm power is off
Switch and breaker off, the unit unresponsive. The technician looks inside with a light, never with a hand.
Free the jam or find the leak
The plate is turned with a wrench from below and the stuck item removed. Then the basin is filled and each joint is checked with dry paper for where water leaves.
Check what lies beyond it
Water runs through the trap and the dishwasher connection. If the sink still drains slowly, the clog is farther down and the job shifts to the drain line.
Reassemble and test
Power returns, the unit runs on cold water, the dishwasher runs a cycle, and the cabinet is watched for drips. A dripping spout at the same sink is a separate faucet repair.
Ocoee kitchens: drain, dishwasher and island sinks
Three code details explain many kitchen leaks and slow drains.
Kitchen drain size
Section 416 of the Florida Building Code, Plumbing, has a disposer connect to a drain of at least 1-1/2 inches and not add to the drainage fixture load. A smaller or crushed trap arm clogs even with a healthy unit. New units must conform to ASSE 1008 and be listed to UL 430, so check for those marks before you buy.
Dishwasher connection
The same section allows the dishwasher drain to join a wye on the sink tailpiece, the disposer's dishwasher inlet, or an air break at a standpipe, with the hose rising and fastened under the sink rim or countertop. A dishwasher air gap that spits water at the counter usually means a clogged line behind it.
Island sink venting
An island sink has no wall to run a vent through. The code allows island venting for kitchen sinks with a disposer or dishwasher, and permits air admittance valves that sit 4 inches above the drain and stay accessible. A gurgling island sink may be a vent problem, not a clog. The local building official has final say.
Permits for a swap
Ocoee lists plumbing among work that needs a permit, but we found no rule written for disposal swaps. Call the Building Division at 407-905-3104 if you are unsure.

Disposal questions from Ocoee kitchens
Yes. Weekends and nights are covered by dispatch. If water is leaking or the sink is backing up, switch the disposal off, stop using the sink and call.
If the unit only hums and nothing is leaking, ask about a same-day appointment when available.
A jam is holding the plate. Switch off power, then use a wrench in the hex socket under the unit to rock the plate back and forth. Press reset once afterward.
If it jams again, the motor or plate may be worn.
No. The city's grease letter lists greasy foods down the drain or disposal as a don't. Cool it in a jar and bin it, and scrape plates first.
The dishwasher drains through the disposal or its connection. When that line clogs, water backs up and exits at the air gap on the counter. Clear the line and check the hose for a sag.
No. A leak at the top ring, dishwasher inlet or drain elbow is usually a seal or gasket. A leak from the bottom or seam means the housing has failed, and replacement is the only fix.
